Thoughts on 1st Week of Homeschool 2015

Super Girl started 1st grade last week! She attends a virtual charter school powered by k12.

Excited for the First Day!

Excited for the First Day!

Last year, we could do as many lessons and on whatever day we wanted to as long as we stayed under 4% progress through the course. It was handy because we could do extra through the week if we wanted Friday off, or do a chunk of the same subject. This year they have changed it to a weekly lesson plan made up by the teachers, and it is so slowwww. I’ve emailed the teacher and she assures me the schedule will start to pick up as we get into the school year but I’m apprehensive. It’s so frustrating because this is exactly why we homeschool, to work at our own pace and so she doesn’t have to wait to learn. I was always waiting on the rest of the class to finish, or helping students who needed extra explanation, and I even had a teacher HATE my guts because I would always be done early and all my work would be perfect (Hi Mrs. Sharb from Indian Trail Elementary in Ohio! haha). We did not want that for Super Girl.

So, it’s not fun yet for the year. Except we started piano lessons, which she did fabulous with! Who else used Alfred’s Piano Course when you were learning?? The ones I ordered from Amazon are EXACTLY like the ones I used to use! Talk about a blast from the past!

JP and I are starting to work together too.

Such A Cutie!

She found a random worksheet and filled it out all by herself, I had no idea she was so good at writing her letters! Oops. Middle child problems I assume. I kept Super Girl home for all her preschool years, and it was nice to be able to work one on one with her. But now that I work with Super Girl on a daily basis…well I only have so many eyes and hands! I’m working with JP and Cowboy together (only 18 months apart, so what the heck) for about an hour every day through play.

I’m planning on breaking out some sensory bins next month! I love those, and Cowboy has yet to experience one! I know him being the messy, explorative boy he is, he’s going to love it too.

Have you started school yet? How’s it going??

Adventure Continues with Our Second Year of Homeschool!

Super Girl is starting 1st Grade tomorrow, and I can not believe where the time has gone, or that we have an elementary student!! We received our k12 supplies last month and set up our shelves with all the books, text and workbooks, and math manipulatives!

Our Set Up for 1st Semester!

Our Set Up for 1st Semester!

I’m excited for this year because Kindergarten felt a bit repetitive for Super Girl’s skill level, I feel like this will be a good challenge for her! I know we will probably be leaving towards the end of the semester, but I’m treating it like we will be here for the whole year. We are going for a teacher Meet and Greet next month, and this Friday we have a field trip to the local trampoline park! Tomorrow will be full of all the orientation and Welcome to… courses and videos so I’ll be glad when that’s over. I took her picture on the first day last year, and will be doing the same tomorrow with a cute printable! Today she’s wearing one of her new pieces of clothing, a purple maxi dress, and I didn’t even think twice about making her save it for First Day pictures….talk about a serious homeschool problem! Haha! We normally do school in our pajamas/what ever, and don’t particularly think about what we are wearing! Maybe next year I’ll remember. Maybe.

I’ve also set up our progress chart and cleared out our bulletin board, complete with an inspirational quote! IMG_3326One of my favorite middle school teachers had this in her classroom so I thought it was fitting 😉

When are you starting school or your homeschool year?? Thoughts? 🙂
