Super Girl started 1st grade last week! She attends a virtual charter school powered by k12.
Last year, we could do as many lessons and on whatever day we wanted to as long as we stayed under 4% progress through the course. It was handy because we could do extra through the week if we wanted Friday off, or do a chunk of the same subject. This year they have changed it to a weekly lesson plan made up by the teachers, and it is so slowwww. I’ve emailed the teacher and she assures me the schedule will start to pick up as we get into the school year but I’m apprehensive. It’s so frustrating because this is exactly why we homeschool, to work at our own pace and so she doesn’t have to wait to learn. I was always waiting on the rest of the class to finish, or helping students who needed extra explanation, and I even had a teacher HATE my guts because I would always be done early and all my work would be perfect (Hi Mrs. Sharb from Indian Trail Elementary in Ohio! haha). We did not want that for Super Girl.
So, it’s not fun yet for the year. Except we started piano lessons, which she did fabulous with! Who else used Alfred’s Piano Course when you were learning?? The ones I ordered from Amazon are EXACTLY like the ones I used to use! Talk about a blast from the past!
JP and I are starting to work together too.
She found a random worksheet and filled it out all by herself, I had no idea she was so good at writing her letters! Oops. Middle child problems I assume. I kept Super Girl home for all her preschool years, and it was nice to be able to work one on one with her. But now that I work with Super Girl on a daily basis…well I only have so many eyes and hands! I’m working with JP and Cowboy together (only 18 months apart, so what the heck) for about an hour every day through play.
I’m planning on breaking out some sensory bins next month! I love those, and Cowboy has yet to experience one! I know him being the messy, explorative boy he is, he’s going to love it too.
Have you started school yet? How’s it going??
